Free fun around Lake Coleridge during ‘Celebrating Selwyn’
A brochure of walks around the Lake Coleridge area offers some free fun for people wanting to enjoy the outdoors and early Autumn weather during Celebrating Selwyn (23 March- 7 April).
Just an hour or less from Christchurch, Rolleston, Ashburton and other towns in the region, the Lake Coleridge area is increasingly becoming a destination for walkers.
The walking brochure is available on www.lakecoleridge.co.nz and provides a brief description of 9 walks in the Lake Coleridge basin. It has been produced by the Lake Coleridge Tourism Group with the help of Selwyn District Council and the Department of Conservation.
Lake Coleridge Tourism Group spokesperson Toni Barlow says the walks range from an easy self-guided stroll around historic Lake Coleridge Village with guided walking notes available from Lake Coleridge Lodge, to more difficult day hikes.
“The best known walk in the area is up Peak Hill. Peak Hill offers unbeatable views if you’re prepared for a climb, but there are also many easier walks that take you to equally beautiful places.
“A popular walk that offers a wide variety of scenery with a comprehensive track guide is the Washpen Falls walk. A small fee is charged for this walk because it has been developed on private land,” she says.
While in the area, as part of Celebrating Selwyn visitors can also see a quilt exhibition at Mt Hutt Lodge, and from 4 April there will be an art exhibition at Terrace Downs Resort. Both exhibitions are free during their opening hours (check the Celebrating Selwynwebsite or guidebook for details). For something completely different, cooking classes for small groups can be booked at Quickenberry Guesthouse (charges apply).
If you decide to head into the Lake Coleridge High Country, make sure you are prepared with plenty of petrol, food, water and warm clothes because there are no shops or petrol stations. Methven is the nearest service town.
More information about activities and accommodation in the area is on www.lakecoleridge.co.nz.
